Telogen Effluvium: Why Your Hair Is Suddenly Shedding
If your hair has started coming out in alarming quantities, handfuls in the shower, strands on your pillow, a thinner ponytail seemingly overnight, there is a good chance you are experiencing telogen effluvium. It is one of the most common causes of sudden hair shedding, and while it can be frightening to live through, it is usually temporary and reversible.
This guide explains what telogen effluvium is, how to recognise it, how long it tends to last, and what you can do to support your hair back to health.
What is telogen effluvium?
To understand telogen effluvium, it helps to know that every hair on your head moves through a growth cycle. Most of your hair, around 85 to 90 percent, sits in the active growing phase at any given time. A much smaller portion rests, then sheds naturally to make way for new growth. This is normal, and losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is nothing to worry about.
Telogen effluvium happens when something disrupts this balance and pushes far more hairs than usual into the resting, shedding phase all at once. A few months later, those hairs fall out together, which is why the shedding can feel so sudden and dramatic. The name itself describes the process: telogen is the resting phase, and effluvium simply means an outflow.
What triggers it?
Telogen effluvium is almost always a response to a trigger, usually something that happened two to three months before the shedding began. This delay is why so many people struggle to connect the two. The most common triggers include significant physical or emotional stress, illness or high fever, childbirth, rapid weight loss or crash dieting, major surgery, and certain nutritional deficiencies such as low iron.
Stress is one of the most frequent culprits, and the link between the two is well established. If you suspect stress is playing a role in your shedding, our guide on whether hair loss can be caused by stress goes into more detail on how to manage it.
How to recognise the symptoms
Telogen effluvium has a distinctive pattern that sets it apart from other kinds of hair loss. The shedding is diffuse, meaning it happens fairly evenly across the whole scalp rather than in distinct bald patches. You will usually notice more hair than usual on your brush, in the shower drain, and on your clothes and pillow.
Importantly, telogen effluvium thins the hair overall but does not typically cause complete baldness. Your hairline usually stays intact, which is one of the ways it differs from male or female pattern hair loss. Many people first notice it as a ponytail that feels noticeably thinner, or more scalp becoming visible under bright light.
How long does telogen effluvium last?
The good news is that telogen effluvium is self-limiting in most cases. Once the underlying trigger has passed, the excessive shedding usually settles within three to six months. After that, the resting hairs are replaced by new growth, though it can take several more months for your hair to return to its previous thickness, since hair grows slowly, roughly a centimetre a month.
In a smaller number of cases, the shedding continues for longer than six months. This is known as chronic telogen effluvium, and it is worth speaking to a doctor or trichologist if your shedding persists well beyond that window, as it may point to an ongoing trigger such as a thyroid issue or a nutritional deficiency that needs addressing.
What you can do to support recovery
Because telogen effluvium resolves on its own once the trigger is removed, the most important step is identifying and addressing whatever set it off. That might mean managing stress, correcting a nutritional gap with the help of your doctor, or simply giving your body time to recover from an illness or major life event.
Alongside that, supporting your scalp and follicles can help create the best possible environment for regrowth. Gentle scalp care, a balanced diet rich in protein and iron, and avoiding harsh styling all give your hair a better chance of bouncing back cleanly. Traditional Chinese herbal preparations have long been used to nourish the scalp during periods of shedding, working to support the follicles as new growth comes through.
Our Hair Follicle Feed & Regrowth Tonic Lotion is formulated with authentic Chinese herbal ingredients chosen to feed the follicles and support healthy regrowth, making it a useful companion during the recovery phase. For those who want to reduce ongoing shedding while regrowth takes hold, the Hair Loss Prevention Tonic Lotion can be worked into the scalp as part of a daily routine.
When to see a professional
Telogen effluvium is usually nothing to be alarmed about, but there are times when a professional opinion is worthwhile. If your shedding lasts longer than six months, comes with other symptoms such as fatigue or changes in your periods, or if you notice distinct bald patches rather than diffuse thinning, it is worth booking an appointment. These can be signs of a different underlying cause that benefits from specific treatment.
For most people, though, telogen effluvium is a passing phase. Your hair follicles are not damaged, they are simply resting, and with a little patience and the right support, the hair you have lost will grow back. Understanding what is happening is often the most reassuring part, because it turns a frightening experience into one you can see the end of.
