Why Hair Goes Grey, and What Can Actually Be Changed
Grey hair arrives without asking, and the internet is full of people selling ways to send it back. So it’s worth separating three things clearly: what actually causes greying, which types can sometimes be reversed, and which cannot no matter what you buy. The honest picture is more interesting than the marketing.
What’s Actually Happening
Hair has no colour of its own. Each strand is essentially transparent, and its colour comes from pigment cells called melanocytes sitting at the base of the follicle, which inject melanin into the hair as it grows. Black, brown, red and blonde are all variations in the type and amount of melanin being added.
Greying happens when those pigment cells stop producing. The follicle continues making hair perfectly well, it just makes it without colour, which is why grey hairs often feel slightly different in texture: unpigmented hair has a subtly different structure. When production stops entirely, you get white; grey is the visual mix of white and still-pigmented strands on the same head.
Two things drive that shutdown. The first is a finite supply of the stem cells that replenish melanocytes, which gradually runs down over a lifetime. The second is oxidative stress, since the process of making melanin generates hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct, and the follicle’s ability to neutralise it declines with age. Left unchecked, it interferes with pigment production and effectively bleaches the hair from within.
The Main Driver Is Genetics
When you go grey is largely inherited. The strongest predictor of your own timeline is your parents’, and specific genes influencing greying onset have been identified. Ethnicity plays a role too, with average onset differing between populations.
This is the uncomfortable part for the reversal industry: age-related greying is a scheduled biological process, and nothing available on a shelf changes that schedule. If your greying tracks your family’s pattern and arrived on time, it isn’t a deficiency and it isn’t something you did.
The Types That Sometimes Do Reverse
Now the genuinely interesting part, because greying isn’t always permanent.
Stress-related greying. The link between acute stress and hair colour has moved from folklore to actual research. Work published in recent years found that individual hairs could be mapped against periods in a person’s life, and that hairs which lost pigment during highly stressful periods sometimes regained it when the stress lifted. That’s a genuinely striking finding, though it appears to apply to hairs on the borderline rather than to greying that’s fully established, and it’s more likely in younger people. Nutritional deficiency. Several deficiencies are associated with premature greying, most notably vitamin B12, and also copper, iron and vitamin D. Where a genuine deficiency is the cause, correcting it can sometimes restore pigment. The important caveat, as with hair growth generally: this helps if you’re actually deficient, and does nothing if you’re not. A blood test through your GP is worth far more than guessing, particularly since B12 deficiency has other consequences worth catching.
Thyroid and other medical causes. Thyroid dysfunction and certain autoimmune conditions can trigger premature greying, and treating the underlying condition sometimes improves it. If greying arrived early and suddenly, especially alongside fatigue, weight changes or other symptoms, that’s a GP conversation.
Smoking. Smoking is consistently associated with earlier greying, thought to be through oxidative stress. Stopping won’t restore what’s already grey, but it removes an accelerant.
The TCM View
Chinese medicine has a long-standing framework for this that maps onto the picture surprisingly well. In traditional thinking, hair colour is closely tied to Kidney Essence, known as Jing, understood as the body’s deep constitutional reserve that governs growth, ageing and vitality. Greying is regarded as one of the visible markers of that reserve gradually declining with age, alongside changes in the bones, teeth and hearing.

Worth knowing: the herb most associated with hair colour in Chinese tradition, He Shou Wu, has been linked in modern reports to liver injury in some individuals and is restricted or subject to warnings in several countries. What to Actually Do
If greying is age-related and on family schedule, the honest answer is that you have two good options: embrace it, or colour it. Both are entirely reasonable, and no serum sits between them.
What is worth doing is looking after the hair you have, because grey hair genuinely behaves differently. Without melanin it tends to be drier, coarser and more prone to breakage, and it’s more vulnerable to sun exposure and to yellowing from product buildup, smoke and hard water.
