Does Dandruff Cause Hair Loss?

Does Dandruff Cause Hair Loss?

If you've experienced dandruff at one time or another, I think we can all agree that it's an incredibly frustrating experience.

Understandably, not everyone wants a 'snow day' look on their scalp, especially when combined with noticeable hair loss.

So, is there a direct link between dandruff and hair loss?

What Causes Dandruff?

Dandruff is a common condition which causes the scalp to flake easily.

There are a wide range of factors which may lead to this condition, including dry skin, irritated scalp, eczema, psoriasis or sensitivity to certain hair products (contact dermatitis).

Some factors may increase your likelihood of being exposed to dandruff, including age, being male (sorry chaps) or certain illnesses (Parkinson's, HIV or a weak immune system).

One positive of this condition is that is it relatively common, not contagious and in the scheme of things, not too serious.

This doesn't detract from the fact it can often be embarrassing to live with, so if you're experiencing this and noticeable hair loss on a regular basis, you want change - understandably.

Are Dandruff and Hair Loss Linked?

Any damage to your scalp and follicle condition can spark unwanted effects, as the following conditions can expose you to dandruff and hair loss:

- Fungal infections (e.g. ringworm)

- Seborrheic Dermatitis

- Scalp Psoriasis

Commonly, any condition which causes the scalp to itch, burn or flake may cause mild forms of hair loss.

It's important to manage these symptoms where possible, as ignoring these may lead to more severe forms of a balding scalp.

Can Dandruff Cause Hair Loss?

Dandruff itself doesn't have a direct impact on hair loss, although it may be a contributing factor to encourage the thinning of your scalp.

Being an incredibly hard-to-ignore condition, the likelihood of scratching your scalp within an itch of its life is quite high when experiencing pesky dandruff.

When your hair follicles become inflamed, this can cause severe damage and scarring, when can have a direct impact to slow your hair growth cycle.

Aggressive brushing, tight hair styles or constant scratching are some of the main culprits to kickstart hair loss conditions.
